Soak the stone for about 20 minutes, or until the stone stops producing bubbles. And splash water on the stone as needed.

    This stone has a good SOILD hard feel and comfortable feed back. It is not an ordinary stone but rather one that has many attributes that become evident when you get into using it. It leaves a hazy finish and after initial honing removes scratches from prior rougher stone.     If we're going to agree your 4000 grit stone is 4000, then the 3000 is as I've said definitely around 2500. It will keep turning a burr if you stay on the stone. The 4000 will not. When freshly dressed it cut's like 2000-2500 but it's not very friable, meaning new particles don't keep coming up and the slurry on the stone just keeps getting finer and finer.
